Winter 2026 - Pool Sessions
Winter Pool Sessions at Colby Sawyer College are back!!! More than just a roll session, we have designed a 4 part curriculum to elevate your skills, keep you fresh during the off-season, and get you ready for Spring! Book one session or check out the awesome savings you get by booking the value pack this year:
POOL PASSES
Pool sessions are 2 hours on the following dates: Jan: 11, 18, 25, Feb 1, 15, 22, March 1, 8 at Colby Sawyer College 1:00-3:00PM

POOL PASSES + LESSONS
Lessons are 1 hour and are followed by 1 hour of open pool time. 1:00-3:00PM at Colby Sawyer College. Lessons are offered in a 4 week curriculum sessions to keep you focused, building skills, and elevating your technique. Choose which session (or both!) you would like to attend.

FULL CURRICULUMS
Session 1: Beginner - 4 Day Lesson Curriculum

Day 1 (January 11) - Getting Comfortable & Safe
Identify and name all kayak parts. Learn how to enter/exit the kayak from shore. Wet exit drills - Goal: Hold breath for 15 seconds. Drain and transport kayak without assistance. Basic forward and backward paddling in a straight line. Self-right using the pool edge (left and right sides). -
Day 2 (January 18) – Balance & Boat Control
Enter and exit kayak while in the water at the pool edge. Self-right using the pool edge (left and right sides). Goal two-fingers, head down. Practice lean cleans (left and right). Sculling strokes from mid-pool to the edge (left and right). Practice sweeping low brace turns (180° left and right). -
Day 3 (January 25) – Bracing & Rescue Skills
High brace technique on both sides (three consecutive braces). T and H rescues with a partner (left and right). Self-rescue drills: flip, swim the boat to the edge, and roll up. Paddle technique refinement (focus on vertical paddle stroke). Continue straight-line paddling practice. -
Day 4 (February 1) – Putting It All Together
Combine multiple skills in a sequence (enter, paddle, wet exit, rescue). Practice pool-edge rolls using paddle and proper head technique (left and right). Review and reinforce balance, strokes, and rescues. End-of-course mini challenge: demonstrate safe entry, paddle, roll, and exit sequence.
Intermediate Kayaking - 4 Day Lesson Curriculum
- Day 1 (February 15) – Rolling Foundations
Review safety and wet exit procedures. Learn and practice the C-to-C roll (left and right). Learn and practice the sweep roll (left and right). Use paddle to assist in pool-edge rolls. - Day 2 (February 22) – Control & Stability
Sculling past 120° for 10 seconds (left and right). Practice underwater orientation and relaxed breathing. Perform rolls while the kayak is pulled by a rope from the side. Rolling recovery with eyes closed. - Day 3 (March 1) – Advanced Rolling Techniques
Master back deck roll (left and right). Practice rolling up after vertical tip overs. “No paddle” recovery drill: throw paddle, tip, swim to paddle, roll up. Focus on clean transitions between rolls and strokes. - Day 4 (March 8) – Power & Precision
Use open-bladed draw strokes to make quick turns (left and right). Enter the kayak mid-pool and attach the skirt. Exit one kayak mid-pool and enter another without falling in.
